How to become ‘the new’ artist; artist promotion 2.0
The old days of getting signed to a record label, letting them handle everything for you (including tours, management, selling records and marketing) are gone and the new days (being independent, going viral, generating an online presence and getting streams) are in! But with the new music industry landscape comes new ways on how to achieve these things. One way is to build a real, engaging (yet online) audience. Here are 8 ways on how to do that.
8 ways to get engaging fans and skyrocket your artist career
1. Direct Fan Relationships Focus on getting real-time, personal interactions over mass communication. Platforms like Discord, Reddit, and exclusive WhatsApp chats are great to foster a genuine community and understand your fans better. It’s important here that you focus on deep interactions rather than large numbers.
2. Become authentic In an industry that’s becoming more increasingly bland, being authentic helps you to stand out. One way to do that is to share every day selfie videos and share voice memos. Do Q&A’s, and share your thoughts on various subjects, but more importantly let your fans feel like they are part of the journey.
3. Community Create listening parties, and get a deeper connection. Community engagement is prioritized before reaching the masses.
4. Reward Fandom Give your most dedicated fans something exclusive, something that they would love to have. This way you are rewarding people to become a true fan. Think of personally greeting them, make something unique for them, sharing exclusive previews. This shows fans they are valued and appreciated.
5. Get Fans Involved Involve your audience in the creative process! Such as voting on tracks or suggesting shows to play. Turn fans into active participants rather than passive consumers.
6. Create Magical Moments Be spontaneous, with unique pop-up shows without announcement. Fans feel lucky to be part of these events, enhancing the sense of community and excitement.
7. Make Fans a Main Character During shows or even in your music, make sure the fans are the ones you care about. A great way would be to have a Patreon, or give shoutouts to particular fans on your album.
8. Be a Connector Organize fun community events such as an event at a bakery, bike rides, facilitate marriage proposals or anything else for your fans! Your art is about bringing people together, so anything in that spectrum will be truly a hit for your fans.
Building a community is crucial today, and when done right, it fuels momentum, makes magical moments viral, and creates a space others want to join. Lean in fully, and your reach will grow.
