In a significant move within the music industry, Apple Music has recently announced a new initiative that directly impacts artists' earnings - they will be paying artists up to 10% higher royalties for music available in spatial audio.

In their own words, the “change is not only meant to reward higher quality content, but also to ensure that artists are being compensated for the time and investment they put into mixing in Spatial”.

Spatial Audio: A Sonic Revolution

Spatial audio is an immersive technology creating a three-dimensional soundstage. Apple Music has been pushing Spatial Audio for a while now, starting with a Mike Dean-backed campaign featuring a special Spatial Audio playlist. Furthermore, many of Apple’s devices come with Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio support as a standard feature, with the latest AirPods sporting the ability to turn your head while different elements of the track come from the same direction as a standout feature.

Spatial Audio is also a success among users. Apple Music’s report states that over 90% of users have experienced music in Spatial Audio, and plays for music available in it have tripled over the past 2 years.
