Universal Music Removes Catalog from TikTok Over Compensation Issues and AI Practices

UMG's current licensing agreement with TikTok officially expires on January 31, prompting the removal of its entire catalog from the platform. This includes approximately 3 million recorded music tracks and around 4 million songs whose publishing is represented by UMG.

Talks between UMG and TikTok broke down after UMG pressed the platform on three critical issues: appropriate compensation for artists and songwriters, protecting artists from the impact of AI-generated music, and ensuring online safety for TikTok users.

TikTok responded by accusing UMG of prioritizing its own interests over those of artists and songwriters, arguing that it has reached 'artist-first' agreements with other labels and publishers and emphasizing its role as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for talent.
